Statement regarding Mr Lester Keegan

22 May 2019

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

STATEMENT MR LESTER KEEGAN

On 21 May 2019, Lester Keegan, a former teacher at Bunbury Seventh-day Adventist Primary School, was sentenced in the District Court of Western Australia for indecent dealing with a child, and acts of gross indecency on another child. We understand the acts for which Keegan was convicted occurred more than 30 years ago.

First and foremost our hearts go out to those who have suffered as a result of this abuse. We wish to express our deep sorrow for the pain caused to the victims and their families. We applaud their decision to lodge their complaint and we remain willing to support them in their journey toward healing.

The Seventh-day Adventist Church has zero tolerance for any behaviour that causes harm to children. Such behaviour is not only criminal, but it is at odds with our Christian worldview. The sexual abuse of children by someone purporting to be a member of our faith community is a shocking and unacceptable betrayal of trust.

As part of our safety framework, everyone who attends our Church is expected to respect and honour our Christian, moral and legislative responsibilities to safeguard our children and vulnerable people. We have a strong ongoing commitment to providing a safe environment for everyone attending our schools, churches and church -funded activities.

We wish to encourage anyone who has a complaint of sexual abuse against any member of the Seventh day Adventist Church to report the matter to the WA Police. If you need assistance in doing so, then staff at Adsafe Limited, an independent child protection agency established by the Church, are ready and willing to help. Adsafe provides support for victims and their families and may be contacted by phone on 1800 220 468.

Easter Camp 2019 Press Release

Western Australian Conference of Seventh-day Adventists
Thursday, 18th April, 2019 10:00PM

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Hosting public events like Easter Camp 2019 annually comes with risks like what we have experienced tonight. For many years, we have been blessed with good weather that has not required existing emergency policies and procedures to be put into action.

Today, on the 18th of April 2019, at 3:11PM, a severe weather warning that affected the Advent Park campsite was issued by the Australian Government Bureau of Meteorology, forcing emergency procedures to be put into action for the safety of all campers and attendees of Easter Camp 2019.

At approximately 6:00PM, campers who live in the Perth Metropolitan Region were instructed to leave the grounds to the safety of their homes and campers from the country side who could not get alternative accommodation off-site were instructed to head to our permanent structures for their safety.

Big Tent was taken down in accordance to our structural engineer’s report which requires the tent to be taken down when a severe weather warning where winds exceed 70KMPH is issued.

We know that this has greatly inconvenienced many of us, especially those who have traveled far and all who have been anticipating a weekend of spiritual refreshment and reconnecting with friends from across our great state. Thank you for your prayers which have been lifted up to God and continue to pray for camp to be back to normal tomorrow.

Easter Camp 2019 Program Updates

Severe Weather Warning has forced us to cancel Thursday (18/04/19) night’s meetings. An evacuation was ordered at 6:30pm requiring all campers to either return home if they live in the city or to assemble at the Youth and Teen sheds which have been set up as emergency accommodation.

We pray that the storm will not affect the rest of camp which is planned to continue, pending an announcement that is expected Friday, tomorrow (19/04/19).

Updates will be released here and also on Facebook, as well as pushed via Convene.
